Convenient little cable
I'm fairly pleased with this little retractable cable. Fortunately, I had read the other reviews, so I was not surprised by the short length and it works for me. Some things you should know:* As other reviewers mention, this is not a 6' cable. The technical details have the correct 2.5' length, but the description is incorrect.* The retractor mechanism is a little cheap and I've gotten it tangled a couple of times. That being said, I've always been able to untangle it and it has recovered.* The rubber around the plug ends is a good size for iPods and most stereo inputs, but it is too wide for the audio jack in an iPhone. I took a sharp knife to one end of the cable and shaved down the sides, then it worked fine even for the recessed iPhone jack. This wasn't too hard to do, though that cable end doesn't look too pretty now.In spite of these reservations, the cable works well, the audio quality seems fine, and it is small, convenient, and nicely... Great cable...but not for iPhone.
This interface cable works great with the iPod but not so great with the iPhone...in fact, not at all. When the iPhone is connected, the phone does not charge and you will receive an error on your head unit's display. The phone will then ask if you want to switch to airplane mode then play only the last album in your library with no option to control the music.

ever since installing this, i've enjoyed driving 10x as much. i honestly can't live without it. i no longer have to take out the navi cd just to listen to music. i used to burn cd's with 18 tracks. now i have 18gb of music to choose from. you can also watch ipod videos with this cable. i can't see myself ever going back to cd's.

It should be noted...
The cable is more or less a must-have. It only works with units that have iPod circuitry built in, and those units are more or less identical to the units below them besides the iPod control. So why get a unit that needs this cable if you're not going to use the iPod functionality? Exactly.Anyway, the cable itself is made of a nice, high quality rubber and connects VERY easily to the corresponding port on the back of your Pioneer head unit.It should be noted, however, that like other Pioneer iPod connectors which allow control through the head unit, the iPod's controls are locked out while it is connected. I was hoping this wasn't the case with this cable and our DEH-P4900IB, but it was... hence only 4 stars.Otherwise, it's great. All song information and control is sent to the head unit as advertised.

Differences between this and a handheld.
For any scan tool, there are 2 things:1) The connector that fits into the OBD port on your car.2) The interface that reads and reports the codes coming from your vehicle.For this item, a PC is required for #2. That's exactly what I wanted. I didn't want a little hand held unit that I had to scroll line by line to see all the codes and then possibly have to go look up code values to see what it was telling me.The software that comes with the unit has lots of features, but is still a bit basic. However, for anyone that's just looking to reset trouble codes, etc, it's just fine.The big benefit of this unit is data logging. You can set whatever parameters you want and then set the software to log it while you're driving. You would spend WAY more for a handheld unit that did data logging.If you want more analysis tools, then you can buy better software that will use the unit to collect data.I had no problems... After purchasing this tool, I compared it to my standard ODB II hand held scanner with much success. Not only does it have all of the funtions of the moderately to expensive hand held scanners found in most auto parts stores, it also allows for live date collection at a fraction of the price. Having a laptop or equivelant is neccessary when using the SX SCAN Tool, allowing for data collection and storage.
