I had this camera to review for Olympus. Here are my quick thoughts.
I asked Olympus if I could review this camera. I had written reviews for them before. To preface the review I will mention that I own several of the Olympus EP2 cameras and the EPL1 camera. While the EPL series cameras don't come with the accessory finder, VF-2, I consider it the reason to buy this camera and this family of cameras. More on that in a second. I gave this camera five stars but you should be clear that all ratings are contextual. It's not a better camera than a Nikon D3 or a Canon 1dsmk3 but it is a wonderful and very capable camera for $600 (with a lens). I consider it an $800 camera because I want to be able to use the 1.4 megapixel finder.Reasons not to buy one: 1. You shoot sports and need super fast autofocus and a very fast frame rate. 2. A seriously good camera for its niche
I am quite surprised at how good the images are that I'm getting, especially jpegs. I'm used to shooting raw because I get better files and can squeeze a bit more juicy goodness out of my photos that in-camera jpeg processing does. Surprisingly, this camera does a great job with jpegs in good light situations. That's the important idea to keep in mind, good light. Kirk Tuck gives this camera a fine review, but realize that he's a lighting pro, who has written several (good) books on the subject.IMO this camera is targeted toward two markets. For those moving up from a point and shoot, it's wonderful. It's familiar and less intimidating than an SLR. It can create better images than even the best point and shoots. The price is reasonable. It's attractive and it's a lot lighter than an SLR. Those people wouldn't consider shooting in bad light without a flash. They wouldn't consider deliberate long exposures to smooth motion effects. Those last two areas are not the camera's...

Fantastic travel and walk around camera!
This camera is the perfect travel companion and great for street photography. It doesn't draw too much attention due to its size, styling and small lenses. The in-body image stabilization is fantastic as is the built in flash. The flash is designed in a way that allows it to be bounced off the ceiling, allowing for a more natural look. The wireless flash support was a key seller for me...I don't have an olympus flash unit but plan on picking up the FL-36R for travel. I have this camera with the kit 14-42 and a panasonic 20mm f/1.7. The 14-42 is silent and is sharp, but the lens construction is on the cheap side and it is slow (in f-stop, not autofocus). Autofocus is fantastic with both lenses and comparable to a GF1 in focusing speed. I love the image quality and the high iso performance is pretty good; images are usable at ISO 1600. The noise that is present has a film-like quality....Overall, this is a fantastic kit at a great price....its not going to replace my...

An Excellent Camera for Walkabouts
The axiom that is so true: The best camera for you is the camera that is with you! Grew tired of backaches while hiking with my Nikon DSLR gear, which increasingly never left the house. Bought an Olympus XZ-1 as a camera that could always be with me ... and was so impressed with it that I wanted its "big brother" for better image quality when on walkabouts or hiking. The Olympus P-3 seemed a bit too much; the PM-1 seemed a bit too little; the PL-3 seemed just right (especially with the tilting screen). The form factor and menu navigation features of the XZ-1 and PL-3 are very similar. The XZ-1 is pocketable; the PL-3 is not due to the protruding lenses. Getting some of the best photos of my life with both the XZ-1 and the PL-3 ... because they are with me.There is another side to this, and that is that people often appear uncomfortable around people taking photos with large DSLRs with large protruding lenses. EPL3 Compact and powerful
In 2005, my need was a camera which had no shutter lag to shoot pictures of my speedy daughters. I ended up with the Nikon D300. Beautiful shots which have been enlarged to 16x20. More recently the kids have grown, while the D300 still fills my photo needs, it would be great to have a video record of their violin and piano recitals. The tilt screen, HD video and small size drew me to the EPL3 which looked like it would fill my need perfectly. Unlike the D300, the EPL3 actually fits in my pants pocket. The quality of the video and the ease of copying the files to my computer drive really surprised me. My EPL3 came with the 14-42mmIIR lens, this combination truly blew me away after reviewing the pics I snapped of a Hawaiian sunset after a heavy rainstorm...breathtaking colors. I cheated a bit by using a 8x ND filter and my tripod. After lugging the D300 around for the past 6 years the EPL3 feels like a toy because of its compact size and weight. Best Camera without having to process images
First of all let me say that I have owned at one time or another just about every major camera brand. Fortunately, I can afford several digicams that all serve a different function. Olympus is the ONLY brand that I own that shoots a picture without me having to be too concerned about post processing.Colors and skin tones are great to my eyes right out of the box. Also I've never had a problems with olympus lenses as I've experienced with other manufacturers lenses. They have always performed spot on without making adjustments or sending them back for exchange. However, every camera has its strengths and limitations. It all depends what type of shooting you do as to the appropriate tool for the job.You can go any camera forum as see the multiple issues that photographers have with their high end equipment and lenses. Then go to an olympus forum and see that the only real complaint is that they may not be as good dynamic range wise as the others or that...

My first micro four thirds camera
Update (4/27/2012)==============Note about Olympus service. It turns out that my camera had an issue with taking picture at fast shutter speed (1/4000s). I called the service and sent it in. It was fixed by week's end, and was shipped it out by 2nd Day Air. It was all for free as my camera is still under warranty. I did not get a refurbished unit; I got mine back. When I tested my 'fixed' camera, I found everything was working as expected and no more problems at high shutter speed. Big kudos for Olympus service!Update (2/6/2012)==============One key feature I forgot to mention is the in-body image stablization (IBIS). Olympus has the IBIS whereas Panasonic only supports the IS built into the lens. There are PROs and CONs of IBIS. However this comes in handy in many cases, and I prefer camera having IBIS where some lenses do not come with IS built-in (OIS). Some of my lenses do not have OIS, and if I do not use IBIS on Olympus, images would not be as...

5-star, great value!
I've been using E-PM1 for a couple of weeks. It's very nicely build and appears to be metal front, back or sides and the top (E-PL2 has only metal front panel). The menu is cleverly designed so you won't miss the additional external controls all that much. Rec button and "right" & "down" buttons can be customized. E.g., you can set Rec button to serve as AEL/AFL, AF/MF switch, "Magnify", "Tele-converter", etc. In addition, if you turn off "keep WB warm" in the menu (it's on by default), the colors will be much better especially indoors. Don't forget to dial flash exposure compesation "+1EV" (the camera will remember this setting) for proper exposure because the bundled flash is always in semi-bounce position when activated.Overall, great little camera with super fast AF (incl. continous AF in HD video), fast buffer clearing with a huge number of customizations available. 5.5fps burst mode and art filter bracketing is really cool. A few things that Olympus won't tell you
I've owned this camera for a few weeks now, so I just wanted write a few notes about this camera that get neglected.1. The image stabilization is only good up to 4 fps, but the default multi shot modes are 5 fps or 3 fps. To get 4 fps, you have to use a custom menu setting.2. Always shoot in multi shot mode. Single shot mode will cause camera lag (my guess is that it waits for the SD card to finish writing in single shot mode). This lowers your shot to shot times down to about 1.5 fps as the camera will just ignore your shutter press. Shooting in multi shot mode solves this problem, at the expense of not always seeing your next shot.3. Buy the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 lens if you want to take any indoor shots without a flash. The kit lens, at f3.5, is just not fast enough indoors. Your shots will come out at 1600 ISO and contain blur or noise, depending upon your noise filtering setting, usually both, because f3.5, just doesn't cut it. Okay, that might...
