Product Description

Panasonic’s LUMIX DMC-GF3 realizes all the features you want from a bulky DSLR interchangeable lens camera, only it accomplishes this in an ultra compact point-and-shoot camera body about as wide and tall as a typical smart phone yet is lightweight and simple to master. This remarkable reduction in size and weight is thanks to advancements in new mirror-free camera technology, and large DSLR format sensors that are more compatible with a new class of compact Micro Four Thirds (MFT) System lenses. This new class of Compact System Cameras (CSC) offers a weight and compactness not seen in traditional DSLRs, yielding greater portability and creative control. The DMC-GF3’s image quality comes from a large DSLR-sized 12.1-megapixel sensor and newly advanced image processing technologies. The DMC-GF3 provides a traditional DSLR-like experience without the need for complicated external mode dials, yet provides intuitive and quick access to common modes like Program, Shutter and Aperture Priority, Manual via a touch-enabled LCD that operates much like a smart phone. The DMC-GF3 provides a dedicated video button that can be used to switch to video capture quickly without changing modes. At the heart of the DMC-GF3’s simplified functionality is a large 3.0-inch LCD (460k- dot) that allows for intuitive touch control of menus and most shooting, focusing, playback and effects controls. Menus can be customized using simple drag-and-drop actions like those on most touch-enabled smartphones. This allows for a custom user interface, giving Quick Menu access to functions that can be tailored to any user’s expertise level. Using the touch-screen operation, a user can lock onto a subject, enabling AF Tracking in both still and video modes. When you’re ready to shoot, the subject will be in focus and ready to capture. GREAT camera, but GREAT, depends how you will use it...
This Panasonic GF3 is a rather impressive camera that can take VERY sharp pictures with really good IQ/Dynamic range, and color overall. Besides my love for Photography I also enjoy using the best of the best cameras in their category if I can afford them. I have owned, or own the Canon S95/Fuji X100/ Sony NEX-5, Had the original E-P1, Had the GF1 prior.I have been searching forever for a VERY SMALL camera that can take DSLR like pictures. Though the GF1 did have a little bit more manual control than the GF1 does, for instance even flash compensation..I can't seem to find that adjustment on this GF3. Even cheap point and shoots often let you change the amount of flash you will use, That's one con here.Overall though, though using the same sensor as the older GF1 and GF2 my pictures from my GF3 look BETTER overall as to color, noise, IN focus, virtually no Moire pattern problems..the GF1 had a lot of Moire pattern noise, the GF3 seems much cleaner...

An excellent step up from a point and shoot or a great DSLR companion.
The Panasonic GF3 is a compact, easy to use camera that takes excellent photos.Design wise the Panasonic is very sleek and compact. It's not going to fit into a jean's pocket, but will slip into a jacket pocket with ease, especially with the small 14mm pancake lens. It's light in weight and is easy to carry around all day. The camera is very discreet and draws little attention. There is a small rubber grip on the back and a nice sized grip on the front. I had no trouble getting a good hold on the camera and it fits nicely in my average sized hands. Build quality of both the lens and the camera is extremely high, with a nice metal body that feels solid and well assembled. Lastly, there is a small pop-up flash that can also be pulled back to function as a bounce flash.Using the Panasonic is simple. For beginners, there is a button on the top of the camera to activate Intelligent Automatic mode. In this mode the camera will do all the thinking for you. For...

Like a Transformer
This camera uses inexpensive mount adapters to travel back in time to the world of manual prime glass. You can get incredible optics in full metal bodies for cheap on eBay.The reason this works on the GF1 is because of the short flangeback distance (distance between the mounting plane and the sensor). The adapters therefore only have to extend other system lenses out to their native flangeback distance. You can't do this on an SLR because it's difficult if the adapted lens needs to be closer to the sensor -- you'll need expensive and distortive optical correction. No other system out there has a shorter distance the m4/3, so for 30 bucks you can use all the Leica and Voigtlander vintage glass you want with virtually no compromise in image quality.

As Good As They Say
Although this body is much smaller than my Nikons, and the sensor is somewhat smaller, the images are /excellent/. Unless you're printing wall murals, this type camera is essentially as good as an SLR.My only real issue with the GF1 is the small step exposure bracketing. One needs to crank off 7 exposures to get +/- 2 e.v. bracketed images (unless I'm misreading the manual -- yes, a printed manual, just like in the old days).I bought the body for less than the gorgeous 20mm lens so I feel like I saved money over buying a body/lens kit.The other minor issue is the lack of a wide choice of lenses (unless you want to hang your larger SLR lenses on these small bodies). I recently bought the current $200 wide zoom which strikes me as a typical kit zoom, adequate for the money, and half of the price of the fixed wide lens that I really wanted.I'm well pleased with the GF1. With the 20mm lens it's only 50% larger than an LX5 (I'm estimating) and about 50% more...

Finally The Digital Camera Holy Grail
Bottom line up front: The elusive compact camera with interchangeable lenses, DLSR Image Quality, DSLR Focusing speed and DSLR performance has finally been made. It is the GF1.I live in Japan so I have been lucky enough to have been playing with this camera since 18 Sep. This camera sold out on the first day from Bic Camera in Japan so it is going to be hard to get a hold of one. Please be aware that this camera is "region" coded so if you buy a Japanese version you will not be able to change the menu language to English. This review is equally applicable to both versions of the GF1. I personally prefer the 20MM (40MM equivalent) f1.7 lens to the 14-45MM (28-90MM equivalent) f3.5-5.6 lens for the following reasons: 1) Since the m43 is relatively small compared to a full frame sensor you need a fast lens to get shallow depth of fields. 2) As a fast lens it is far more usable in low light situations. This lens is ~2 to 3.5 f stops faster than the 14-45MM...

Unique camera - Kudos to Panasonic
Fantastic portable cam with decent image quality and extraordinary features. It filled the gap between my Panasonic LX3 and Canon 5DMkII as a small size camera with all the features I want. What do you get? Small package; fast great lens (20mm); DSLR IQ; HD movies; fast autofocus (+ face-recognition AF); super looks (+ pride of ownership); very sharp LCD. Importantly, you don't look like a geek when you use it in a group. The colors are very very good (I shoot raw and develop in Panasonic Silkypix in "Filmcolor A" mode).Downsides? High ISO noise is not as good as Canon DSLRs (40D etc). AF area selection is painful, because the arrow buttons no longer can be used for their original functions. Colors of the LCD screen are not accurate. Continuous autofocus in movie mode tends to use f/1.7 & it hunts a lot. This means significant portions of the movie end up out of focus. In some auto modes (e.g.: aperture priority + auto-ISO), camera picks 1/30 exposure time, resulting in...

Not the holy grail - not yet
Ok - so this is hands down the best little camera available right now. But is it good enough? My humble opinion - not so. I bought this camera from Amazon a month ago - with the 20mm 1.7 lens. I have used it for a vacation in Barbados as well as street photography and 'go anywhere' type of shots. Here are my impressions.Pros:- Nice form factor and small size. It can easily slip into a big pocket.- Finally, someone figured out the contrast detection autofocus. It's not perfect. On about 5% of my shots - the autofocus locked but the shot came out clearly misfocused. I found this to be acceptable, though.- The 20mm 1.7 is a great lens - very sharp, very fast and a pleasure to use.- The build quality is good.- The camera feels solid, the controls are generally well laid off, and it is speedy to shoot.- The features offered are on par or above the mid level DSLRs out there.- Good image quality up to ISO 200.- The display is good...

Consumer review for consumers (i.e. parents) looking for increased photo quality
This review is really intended for parents, grandparents and non-pros who are looking for a camera that will improve the quality of their photos, without strapping a massive camera around their necks. This is a great camera for that.Per the title, I'm not a pro or even an amateur photographer. I had a Lumix DMC-TZ3, which is very small and has a big zooms. It worked well for pictures of our children outside in bright light. However, the indoor and low light quality was not as good as we wanted. Since many of these family photos will be kept, saved, and archived for a long time, we were willing to spend some extra money IF we could find a camera that would do it and that was convenient and easy to use.As an aside, we tried a couple other point and shoot cameras (thanks to Costco's great return policy) but, with some research, realized that ever increasing megapixels and zoom were not going to help us. We needed better lenses and bigger / better...

My Favorite Digital Camera So far
B. Fuller's Review is quite extensive - so I can only add that after one day of producing test shots - still life and landscape, that this is my favorite digital camera so far. I have owned quite a few - ever since digicam's hit the 2 megapixel mark, including camera's with very different sensor technology, and even the leica M8. I look at lens and image quality first, build quality and features / usability and price, and for the money, the GF1 is a real winner. I also have a Sigma DP-1, and while I really love it - it suffers the same issues as the EP-1. Really nice cameras, but with shortcomings that are just a bit too much to justify (IMHO).I have been a huge fan of the Leica designed lenses on just about all of the Panasonic Lumix cameras, and their OIS is quite amazing. If my Sigma DP-1 had the fast focus and responsiveness of the GF1, and if it has a zoom lens with _some_ range, it would have held the top shelf position. I have replaced my Panasonic Lumix...

This sensor is also advantageous for photo and movie recording with its high S/N, thanks to a new circuit structure that is unaffected by the noise generated in each of the circuits. It results in clear images even when taken at high ISO sensitivity. Ultra-Portable Pancake Lens: LUMIX G 20mm/F1.7 ASPH. This bright F1.7/20mm (35mm camera equivalent: 40mm) fixed focus lens makes it easier to take bright photos with soft focus in dimly lit conditions without a flash. speedy camera
My other camera is a Canon Rebel XTi which is a few years old. On our family trip to Europe recently, I took the GF2 with the 14mm pancake lens only. The camera focuses fast with virtually no shutter lag. Exposure was very good, better than my SLR. The 28mm equivalent lens was very good for all the family pictures, landscapes and all the sights. The HD movie mode was also very useful as it's activated by a dedicated button. I took over a thousand pictures on this trip and dozens of short videos, and my 32 GB SDHC card was not even half full. I highly recommend this camera. It is compact enough to fit into my coat pocket, which is another reason I chose the pancake lens rather than the zoom lens. Picture quality seems to be similar to my SLR with similar low light capability. ISO 800 was very usable.

A " Sleeper " !
I purchased this Camera last June , and I find it a Delight to use . I mainly use the 20mm Lens , and I find it Very Fast and a Nice Format of 40mm ! I have used the 14-42 Lens and that too gives pleasing Results ! I have taken some very early A M Pictures , and the Strength of the Lens Really produces Breath taking Shots ! I have other digital Cameras , but find Myself gravitated to this specific combination ! One click of Mode Dial , and I have B & W capability at My fingertips ! I have been into Photography for over Half of My Life Time , and This Camera has given Me Infinite Pleasure ! Used Properly , it can give You Pleasure also ! R E Keay

See reviews for this camera with the kit lens
There are many reviews and extremely positive. Look up the camera with the 14-45 kit lens. This is a fantastic high-end camera with image quality in many situations comparable to -- even better than -- a lot of mid level DSLRs.With the highly regarded 14-45 Panny lens, as a "walking around" camera for outdoor shooting it really can't be beat IMHO.However as the one reviewer here points out, this camera has an autofocus system that isn't as fast as most true DSLRs.If you shoot a lot of sports or wildlife, the G1 is not your camera -- you really need a full size DSLR with a bigger sensor and fast lenses.Low light performance, similarly, is not bad if your subject is relatively stationary -- but not comparable to the newest DSLRs. For example, ISO800 is at the edge of this camera's performance range, but on the Canon Rebel T2i, ISO3200 will still produce great images. The T2i is twice as much money and a lot more bulk, however.
