I like the System, easy interface, so many set up options!Overall opinion, recommend, very happy with purchase, my main concern was power outages and the ability for the system to manage a UPS and shut down as needed, and this puppy does this!Only one personal thought, as I like to run drives as cool as possible!The temperature fan control can not be automatically adjusted for temperatures below the 45°C which means the drives are starved of air flow, more so on the center drives - 2 & 3!The only work around is to set the fan into manual mode fan run 24/7, in LOW - MED - HIGH!HDD temp control is paramount over System Temp, well for me!My System has 4 2TB HDD, with the fan set in Auto mode, temps as follows, system idle, I am yet to test the rig while under constant data load!System temperature 38°C/100°FHDD 1 temperature 42°C/107°FHDD 2 temperature 47°C/116°FHDD 3 temperature...

Great product...lots of bang for your buck
Having had this NAS for a while now, I'm extremely pleased. Most of the products that are out there and around this price range have big limitations somewhere (must use specific drive manufacturers, small RAID options, slow transfer speed, etc.). This device STARTS with the 4 drive option (with a huge range of supported drives) and then is capable of EXPANSION with more devices! It can also use TWO Ethernet NICs to drive up the speed (assuming you have a switch to handle that and your computer has the available bandwidth to it). Right now I just have the single 100Mbps connection though and still get 6.5-8 MBps (that's up to 64 Mbps for those looking at network bandwidth and not file transfer speeds).The setup was easy and needed minimal instructions. If you are looking for more options, not only does this have the built-in media player, web server, etc...but it's based on a Linux flavor so it's going to be very modifiable for those that have the drive to expand its...

Great NAS/Server
I have owned this NAS for almost a year now and have absolutely no complaints. Set up is very easy and it has done everything I needed it to do and more. I use it as storage for all of my music, movies, and pictures among all of my other files. I use the web interface extensively from work and on the road. I use both secure web and ftp with no problems. Speed has been just fine. Qnap forums have been great for references and the additional software applications from Qnap are intriguing. The only thing left that I wish it had was a Calibre e book server for my wife's Kindle and I would be all set. Overall I highly recommend for reliability and ease of use. Great value.

Works great - Make sure you get the right disks
I'll keep this short & to the point:Time of ownership: ~8 months.Documentation is good - there's a quick start guide that gets you going reasonably quickly. It's geared towards PC users, but I was able to suss out the steps for OS-X. There are a lot of steps though, be sure to follow the QSG carefully.The hardware itself is decent, I had some issues with fitment (sliding drive trays in and out), but once I got the hang of it, things went fine. It's reasonably quiet, though since it's a NAS, it's in my basement.The software is excellent for a NAS neophyte, easy to use, full featured. You have the option of desktop client or web-based administration. Having a bit of system administration experience helps with the more advanced management (folder permissions, etc). But the basic elements are easy enough for a low/mid-level computer user to set up (and if you're buying this, you're probably not a complete n00b anyway). Amazing product for the pricepoint
If you need serious storage, take a long look this NAS. I was using a RAID 5 array in my server. I had it running with a hot spare and it had preserved my data very well over the last 5 years. Then one day I lost the MBR and poof! - all gone. No hard drives failed so not even a RAID 6 config would have worked; they were just bereft of data. Possible to recover? Probably, but really expensive. I had backed up the critical files to an external smaller USB drive, but lost lots of data that was less critical - yes the stupid does burn. Obviously, a RAID 5 setup does you no good if it fails in total, unless you have a lesser (less costly) but equal sized storage system. Also, it was a lot slower than this NAS.So now my new plan is 8TB of storage on this baby with (4) 2TB external drives to back it all up - RAID 1 the hard way. It would have been nice to have two of these with 16TB total backing each other up but that was out of my budget. It's quite fast and easy to setup...

Reliable, Friendly, Effective
Overall I am pleased with this NAS. It is smaller then I expected from the photos (not a bad thing) and is well built. The latches on the drive bays could have been a bit more solid, the locks are really just there to prevent accidental drive removal, but will do little to no good against forced entry.QNAP's web administration software is very handy and pretty much all configuration can be done via this interface with the option of manual command line tweaking if you are into that sort of thing. QNAP supplies a QPKG utility to install new applications, one of which is IPKG which can open the door to a lot of other optware packages. This is an ARM processor model, so any third party code would have to be cross-compiled, but I'm happy with what came stock.This model is CPU bound for performance. Using 3 Seagate 2TB 5900 rpm green drives in raid-5 took about 17 hours to initialize. I suggest using efficient drives over performance models due to the limitations of...
